Anatomy of a meta description that earns the click
- Say what the page gives. "Step-by-step guide to repotting a snake plant" is better than "Learn about snake plants".
- Include the topic words. Google bolds words that match the query, which draws the eye.
- Add one proof point. A number, time saved, or what makes this page different.
- End with a soft call to action. "See the soil mix we use" or "Get the checklist".
- Keep it honest. A mismatch with the page means Google will likely swap in its own snippet.

Questions people ask
How long should a meta description be?
Aim for about 140–155 characters. Google truncates desktop snippets at roughly 920 pixels (around 155–160 characters) and mobile snippets a bit later, so put the key point in the first 120 characters.
Does Google always use my meta description?
No. Google often writes its own snippet from page text when it better matches the query. A clear, accurate description that includes the main topic gives you the best chance of it being shown.
Are meta descriptions a ranking factor?
Google has stated that meta descriptions are not used for ranking. They matter because they influence whether people click your result.
Should every page have a unique meta description?
Yes. Duplicate descriptions across many pages are unhelpful to searchers; if you can't write unique ones for every page, prioritise your most important pages.
